The Movie Fanatic votes Ryan as the hottest young actor.

Ryan Gosling- He is the actor that even his peers talk about. He likes to play dark, disturbed characters, but he can also play romantic leads or be an innocent guy who fell in love with a life-size doll. Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling has come a long way from his Disney stint as one of its mousekeeters. Noted for his role in Lars and the real Girl, Gosling is once again making the list as one of the year’s best actors.

Famous Roles: As Noah Calhoun in the romantic-drama "The Notebook," opposite former flame Rachel McAdams and as the young Jewish Nazi Danny Balint in The Believer. But perhaps he is best remembered for his portrayal of drug addict/history teacher Dan Dunn in the acclaimed film Half-Nelson.

Why he’s numero uno: A risk-taker who care little about building an image, Gosling prefers to choose the characters he like to play, and work with the most acclaimed directors without having to deal with hype- in fact he doesn’t need it. While he has the tendency to ‘hide’ and concentrate on his craft, media can’t seem to get enough of him. Says Gosling:

“I hear about actors who become the role and I think 'I wonder what that feels like'. Because for me, they're all me. I relate to these characters because aspects of their personality are like me. And I just turn up the parts of myself that are them and turn down the parts that aren't.”

Coming up: After leaving the cast of The Lovely Bones, Gosling is being eyed to play Kurt Cobain in Courtney Love’s production about her former husband, the fallen Nirvana lead singer. Gosling & Kirsten Dunst are also set to star in new film "All Good Things", a period love story/murder mystery. He is also being eyed to play a younger version of Jack Ryan, the CIA agent made famous by such actors as Harisson Ford and Alec Baldwin.

Quint sees Ryan Gosling.

Gosling was a little different than the others because he really didn’t have a ton of work to pull from, but there was plenty of his known work (THE NOTEBOOK, which got a ton of teenage girls, and more than a few middle-aged ones, screaming like the Beatles just took the stage, FRACTURE, HALF-NESLON and LARS AND THE REAL GIRL) and some of his lesser known stuff (like his smaller role in REMEMBER THE TITANS, THE BELIEVER, THE SLAUGHTER RULE and THE UNITED STATES OF LELAND).

Things I learned:

-Gosling moved to LA when he was a young actor… when asked why, he said it was the weather, that he knew he wanted to move to Southern California when he was walking to school one day and saw a frozen cat.

-The makers of the Real Dolls discontinued the type of doll Bianca was in LARS IN THE REAL GIRL, not because of it being in the movie, but because their costumers didn’t like the realistic eye-lids. Apparently that made the doll look bored. So now they’re all wide-eyed.

-Bianca, the Real Doll, was present at table reads.

Ryan's independent spirit rewarded with top film accolade
Awards icon

Showing off his prestigious award at the Santa Barbara film fest, Ryan Gosling may well have been reflecting on just how far he's come since the days of The Mickey Mouse club.

The former child actor - whose colleagues once included Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears - looked delighted by the prize honouring his contribution to the independent movie scene.

Ontario-born Ryan was presented with the Independent Award by Craig Gillespie, the director of his latest movie Lars And The Real Girl.

The drama - in which a painfully shy loner strikes up an unconventional relationship with a blow-up doll - is typical of the 27-year-old's unconventional choices.

Despite his stock being so high in Hollywood, Ryan, who was Oscar-nominated in 2007, still sometimes has the feeling his career could stall.

"You know sometimes department stores have these competitions where, if you win, you get ten minutes to go in and take anything you want?" he once posed in an interview. "That's what I'm doing. I'm running in and trying to grab as many characters as possible before they pull the plug on me."

The real Ryan.

It is a scientific fact that the astonishingly talented actor Ryan Gosling causes one of two reactions in females: He either renders them speechless or makes them shriek uncontrollably. Waiting in the press line outside of the Lobero Theatre on Tuesday night, a gaggle of females with “The Notebook” in hand wailed “Ryan!” much to the chagrin of reporters, myself included. At merely 27, Ryan Gosling, the recipient of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s inaugural Independent Award, has accomplished much more than mere heartthrob status. But when I was confronted by Mr. Gosling himself, smiling a foot away from me in the press line, my mind drew a blank. With deep-set blue eyes, Gosling bears no resemblance to the often profoundly troubled characters he plays. He raised his eyebrows, awaiting my question, and I blurted, “Which presidential candidate do you support?” He squinted, looked confused, and said, “I don’t know.” And that was that.

Thankfully, Jenelle Riley of Back Stage West Reporter, who interviewed the actor in the Lobero in between clips of his eclectic, primarily independent films, was slightly more levelheaded. Riley said Gosling was the most “consistently compelling” actor working today, and asked about his fledgling days in the Mickey Mouse Club and the show “Young Hercules.” “This is actually a roast, isn’t it?” Gosling asked, as the crowd laughed uproariously. Though his acting talents are formidable, the soft-spoken Gosling proved that he also has excellent comedic timing and a winning sense of humility. “What’s my worst nightmare? Watching all my work in front of these nice people and then talking about it,” Gosling said, and he couldn’t have sounded more earnest.
